Progress Sheet

1. Acquire land
Guidelines:
Minimum land required: 2 acres or 42 nalis. 1 nali = 2048 square feet
A Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) school in India must have 2 acres of land.
Progress Notes: Shri Nageshwar Giri Maharaj has donated his land for this purpose. The land is sufficient.
a. Select a suitable area for the school: Badgal Rautela where the land has been donated is well connected to different villages in this area. Newer roads are being made that will further enhance connectivity.
b. Complete paperwork for the land: This is work in progress and proving to be quite an uphill task. Babaji (Shri Nageshwar Giri Maharaj) never bothered to register the land in his name as he is a renunciate (sanyasi). The land belongs to his deceased father and two deceased uncles. He has no brothers and has 3 sisters from one of the uncles. The other uncle died issueless. All told, he is the only heir to this property as his first cousin sisters have all agreed to donate the land for the school. Baba didn't even have an ID and an Aadhar card was made for him. However, the Aadhar card needs to be rectified as it doesn't properly state his father's name. For this purpose, I intend to create a voter's ID for him so that the voter ID can be used to rectify the aadhar. I went to the primary school that he attended and got his birth cum transfer certificate. This needs to be followed through on priority.
2. Create a public charitable trust
Guidelines: A public charitable trust is required to run the school.
a. Identify trustees. Done. I will be the managing trustee of the said trust and Babaji will be a trustee. Newer trustees can be added if required. However, to reduce the amount of paperwork required, it's best that there be only two trustees at this moment. A trust can create various committees and teams for various projects.
b. Engage with a lawyer. Preliminary talks with a lawyer and chartered accountant have happened in Dehradun.
c. Create a trust deed. Not done. A valid ID for Babaji is being made. Also, funds to pay the lawyer's fees are being arranged.
d. Register the trust. Not done. See above.
3. Build infrastructure
Guidelines:
For a primary school, classes 1 through 5, we require 7 rooms of the size 500 square feet, two toilets, a washroom, a library, a staff room and a headmaster's room, a playground, and a boundary wall.
For a middle school, classes 1 through 8, we require 9 rooms of the size 500 square feet, two toilets, a washroom, a library, a computer room, staff room and a headmaster's room, a playground, and a boundary wall.
For a high school, classes 1 through 10, we require 11 rooms of the size 500 square feet, four toilets, two washrooms, a library, a computer room, a staff room and a principal's room, a playground, and a boundary wall.
For a senior high school, classes 1 through 12, we require 17 rooms of the size 500 square feet, eight toilets, four washrooms, a library, a computer room, a staff room and a principal's room, a playground, and a boundary wall.
Status: No infrastructure has been made so far at the location. We have 60 days from now to create infrastructure before we can start admitting some students. The goal right now is to create a couple of tin shed rooms and a toilet and a washroom so that we can start admitting students. This is an urgent task.
5. Hire staff
Guidelines:
For a primary school, we need 6 teachers (1 for preschool), 1 headmaster, 1 janitor (aayah), 1 guard at the minimum.
For a middle school, we need 9 teachers (1 for preschool), 1 headmaster, 1 janitor, 1 guard at the minimum.
Notes: In the long run, the school needs to be able to hire high quality teachers to ensure great quality education. A young, high quality teacher from a city will only work in this area if they get a good pay, a place to stay, a like minded community of teachers, and good education for their own children. I will write more on this later.
Status: We have 3 teachers and 1 janitor (aayah). No guard.
4. Arrange for transport
Guidelines:
There are two options available to us. One is that the school provides a school bus and charges a nominal fee for the same. This means that costs for a driver and maintenance will need to be factored in. The nominal fee can pay for the fuel; however, funds will need to be arranged for the driver's salary as well as the maintenance.
Option 2 is that we ask the students to arrive on their own using the services of local taxis. This is not a preferred option because it is hard to find local taxis as there only a few of them in this area and because it is not a safe option for the students. Children are crammed into a small taxi car and driven to the school.
Requirements:
For a primary school, we require two school buses.
For a middle school, we require three school buses.
6. Admit students
7. Raise funds
a. Raise funds for infrastructure
Guidelines:
A single tin shed room which contains a cemented flooring, tin walls, tin roof, and an insulation from underneath the roof will cost roughly Rs. 200000. A toilet costs roughly about Rs. 40000, a 2 meter high boundary wall costs about Rs. 2700,000 for a length of 500 meters, and Rs. 1350,000 for a length of 250 meters.
Note: A well insulated, mixed material tin shed is a good choice for a hilly region as these structures are earthquake resistant as well as low cost.
For a primary school, classes 1 through 5, we require 7 rooms costing Rs. 1400000, two toilets costing Rs. 80000, a washroom costing Rs. 40000, a library costing 200000, a staff room costing 200000 and a headmaster's room costing 200000, a playground costing Rs. 100000 in excavation and leveling, a boundary wall of about 250 meters costing Rs. 1350000, furniture and miscellaneous costing about 300000 to a total of Rs. 38,70000.
For a middle school, classes 1 through 8, we require 9 rooms costing Rs. 1800,000, three toilets costing Rs. 120,000, a washroom costing Rs. 40,000, a library costing Rs. 200000, a computer room with 5 computers, printer, uninterrupted power supply costing Rs. 400000, a staff room costing Rs. 200,000 and a headmaster's room costing Rs. 200000, a playground costing Rs. 100000 in excavation and leveling, and a boundary wall of about 300 meters costing Rs. 1600,000, furniture and miscellaneous costing about 400000 to a total of Rs. 5060000.
For a high school, we will roughly need about Rs. 7500,000. For a senior high school, we will need Rs. 15000,000.
Current Status: Available funds for infrastructure, none. I am trying to use my provident fund; however, I have had no luck in trying to utilize it as my application keeps getting rejected on one flimsy ground or another. Donations are solicited.
b. Raise funds for running costs
Guidelines:
Salary considerations: A teacher's monthly salary here is Rs. 8000 to 15000. A janitor's salary is Rs. 3000 to Rs. 6000. A guard's salary is about Rs. 8000 for the extra hours.
Other costs include devices for morning prayer, teacher supplies such as chalk, charts, answer sheets, sports equipment such as playing balls, table tennis, monkey bars and so on.
For a primary school, we need about Rs. 90,000 per month or Rs. 1080000 per annum to pay for the teachers. Calculated for 6 teachers drawing Rs. 10000, an aayah drawing Rs. 6000 per month, a headmaster drawing Rs. 12000 per month, and a guard drawing Rs. 8000 per month and other costs of Rs. 2000 per month.
For a middle school, we need about Rs. 123000 per month or Rs. 1476,000 per annum to pay for the teachers.
Note: These costs are based on the local pay norms. However, to hire quality teachers, these costs will increase at least 5 times.
Current Status: Available funds for this year's session: None. Donations are solicited.
c. Raise funds for transport
Requirements:
For a primary school, we require two school buses costing about Rs. 2600000.
For a middle school, we require three school buses costing about Rs. 3900000.
Status: Available funds for transport are none. The children use a taxi to commute to the school.
